Sprout Living : The Japanese Farm House

February 2nd, 2012 Filed under: Building Design

This is a farm house which was designed and built for a family who wanted a yard, but needed it to be practical. This Japanese farm house is called Sprout. Studio Archi Farm, a Japan-based architecture firm designed this house. They elevated the yard, which doubles as a car port and keeps the machinery out of view from the main living area.

This simple house has a no-nonsense facade that allows ample light to stream in through its 360 degree windows. Large overhangs help regulate the interior climate. It can provide shade when necessary. The main living area with the kitchen, dining, and living room, all provide views of the expansive lawn and the farmland beyond. The cooling for this clever farm house is provided from well water. The water is pumped up to the roof and then is used to water the lawn.
